Instagram image sizes and how to resize for them

Instagram recompresses everything you upload. You cannot avoid that, but uploading at the exact size it expects means it only compresses — it does not also resample, which is what makes photos look mushy.

The sizes

  • Square post: 1080 × 1080 px (1:1)
  • Portrait post: 1080 × 1350 px (4:5) — takes the most screen space in the feed
  • Landscape post: 1080 × 566 px (1.91:1)
  • Stories and Reels: 1080 × 1920 px (9:16); keep text out of the top and bottom 250 px
  • Profile picture: 320 × 320 px, displayed as a circle
  • Carousel: all slides share the ratio of the first one

Crop, then resize

  1. Open Crop image, pick the ratio (1:1, 4:5 or 9:16) and frame the shot. Cropping decides what the viewer sees; do this by hand.
  2. Download and drop the result into Resize image with a 1080 px width — or use the Instagram preset there. Several photos can be resized at once.

Quality and size

Instagram's limit is 30 MB but its own compression kicks in hard above about 1.6 MB. Exporting at 1080 px and running Compress JPG at 85% lands well under that and looks identical on a phone.

Colour

Instagram converts to sRGB. Photos exported in Display P3 or Adobe RGB shift slightly on upload — export as sRGB from your editor to see on Instagram what you saw on your screen.
